JAL Group Passenger Traffic Results for 2007 Golden Week Vacation Period
Tokyo May 7, 2007: Today JAL Group announced the results for the traditional Japanese “GOLDEN WEEK'' vacation period, stretching this year from April 27 to May 6, 2007. The overall number of passengers traveling on JAL Group airlines was up by 1.6% on the same period last year.
During the 10-day period made up by a combination of public holidays and weekends, the number of passengers traveling on international routes operated by JAL and its subsidiaries - Japan Asia Airways (JAA) and JALways (JAZ) - totaled 360,088, down 1.0% on the same period last year.
When compared to the same period last year, passenger bookings were up by over 10% on routes serving China, Guam, and South Korea: up respectively by 11.3%, 11.0%, and 17.7%. Passenger numbers went up by 3.9% on JAL flights serving Southeast Asia.
During FY2006 the year ending March 31, 2007, JAL reduced scheduled flight frequency on routes serving Australia and the US. This capacity reduction accounts for the decrease in the number of seats available on JAL for travel to these tourist destinations.
The seat load factor for international routes was 67.5%, up 0.4 points on last year.
The number of passengers traveling on JAL Japan domestic routes during Golden was 1,263,108, 2.3% up on the same vacation period last year.
Demand was particularly high on flights serving Hokkaido, southwest Honshu, Shikoku and the Okinawa Islands.
JAL Group operated an additional 24 flights on domestic Japan routes to accommodate increased demand for travel to Okinawa (Naha), as well as Sapporo.
Japan domestic routes seat load factor was 67.0%, up 3.3 points when compared to the same period last year.
