JAL Increase International Cargo Fuel Surcharge

TokyoDecember 14, 2007: JAL will increase from January 16, 2008 the international cargo fuel surcharge for flights departing from Japan only, subject to government approval.

The international cargo fuel surcharge on long haul routes for flights departing Japan will increase from 80 yen to 101 yen per kg. In the case of short haul international routes, the surcharge will increase from 69 to 87 yen per kg (see below).

JAL has decided to increase the fuel surcharge on international cargo flights departing Japan, as during the period October 25 to November 23, 2007 the price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel averaged US$100.00 per barrel for 20 consecutive working days.

The company is conducting a wide range of countermeasures to limit the full impact of the price increase including fuel hedging, fuel consumption reductions, and the introduction of more fuel-efficient medium-sized aircraft to its freighter fleet.

Despite these measures, the company is still reluctantly obliged to ask its international cargo customers to bear part of the burden caused by the unprecedented increase in the price of fuel over the past few years.

The fuel surcharge will be reduced once the average monthly price of Singapore kerosene falls below the benchmark of US$95.00 per barrel for 20 consecutive working days.

The surcharges will be cancelled completely when the average monthly price of Singapore kerosene falls below the benchmark of US$28.49 per barrel.

JAL first introduced the international cargo fuel surcharge in 2001.
