JAL Group Supports UNICEF-Sponsored J8 Summit 2008
Tokyo, April 1, 2008: Japan Airlines (JAL) will provide support to the UNICEF-sponsored J8 (Junior Eight) Summit 2008 to be held in Hokkaido from July 1 to July 10, 2008.
Using its global network, JAL will support the J8 Summit by providing air transport to the young people aged 13 to 17 selected to participate in this event. In the lead up to the event, JAL will also run in its in-flight magazine, skyward, and in-flight video programming on international routes news items on the activities of the J8 Summit.
From July 7 to 9 Japan will host the next Group of Eight (G8) Summit at Lake Toya, Hokkaido to be attended by the heads of eight of the world’s leading countries - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK, and USA - plus the President of the European Commission.
The J8 (Junior Eight) Summit, the official youth event of the G8 Summit, will also be held at the beginning of July in Hokkaido, but in the city of Chitose. At the J8 Summit, young people representing the G8 nations and other countries and regions around the world will discuss and debate the items on the G8 agenda, including issues particularly relevant to the younger generation.
The main issues to be discussed will be climate change and global warming, poverty and development, and global health. At the end of their deliberations, the J8 participants will present their recommendations on the issues to the world leaders during the G8 Summit.
Since 1991, JAL has been a corporate supporter of UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund). JAL aircraft display the UNICEF logo to bring the organization to public attention. The airline supports UNICEF’s ‘Change for Good’ fund-raising campaign by collecting on all international flights spare change in different currencies donated by passengers. JAL also helps to raise funds by selling UNICEF greetings cards in-flight and at company retail outlets, and has promoted UNICEF through the airline’s in-flight magazine, in-flight video programming, and street collection campaigns.
