JAL Group Traffic Forecast During New Year Vacation Period
Tokyo December 19, 2008: Japan Airlines (JAL) has forecast a total of 398,387 international passenger reservations on JAL Group airlines during the Japanese New Year period, from December 26, 2008 to January 4, 2009. It is an estimated 6.6% decrease in the number of international passenger reservations during the vacation period amidst the current economic climate and with the overall international seat capacity 4.8% down against the same period last year following continuous network restructuring. The forecast international seat load factor is 77.8%.
When compared to the same period last year, the forecast number of passenger bookings to Korea is expected to increase by 3.1%. This leads to a forecast improvement in the seat load factor on the Korea route from 86.4% to 89.7%. Also estimated to increase versus previous year are the seat load factors for Honolulu, Taiwan and China by 2.9%, 0.6% and 1.1% respectively.
The JAL Group will operate additional 71 flights to vacation destinations such as Guam, Hawaii, Fairbanks, Hong Kong and Palau to name a few.
For domestic Japan routes over the festive season, JAL has forecast that seat supply, measured in available seats, will be 0.2% up versus the same period last year. In terms of the total number of domestic passenger bookings, the airline expects 1,174,634 reservations, 1.9% down on last year with the load factor of 63.1%.
JAL Group plans to operate an additional 114 flights to meet the demand on popular domestic Japan routes such as Tokyo - Sapporo, and Tokyo - Kagoshima.
Looking at both international and domestic operations over the New Year period, JAL has forecast that seat supply will be 1% down while passenger booking numbers will be 3.2% down, resulting in an overall decrease in seat load factor by 2.2 points.
