JAL Group Traffic Results for 2011 Summer Vacation Period

TOKYO August 22, 2011: The JAL Group today announced international and domestic passenger traffic results for the Japanese summer vacation that spanned August 12 to August 21, 2011. The load factors for both international and domestic JAL Group flights this period are 90.8% and 82.4% respectively and the highest achieved since 2003.

During the 10 days, a total of 256,492 passengers traveled overseas on JAL Group international flights, making use of the lengthened vacation period this year and the favorable exchange rate. This is 22.5% fewer passengers carried in the same period last year, closely corresponding with the 22.6% decrease in available seat capacity on the international network. Load factors on round-trip flights to all overseas regions are above 90% with the exception of China and Oceania which were 82.8% and 88.3% high respectively. Flights to Honolulu and South Korea are the most full, both at 94.5% load factor. JAL operated a total of 28 extra flights - six to Budapest, Croatia and Slovenia in Europe, two to Alaska, twelve to Honolulu and eight to Palau during this peak season.

The JAL Group carried a total of 1,132,998 passengers on domestic flights during this period, 10.9% fewer passengers versus a year ago. Available seat capacity this year is also 18.8% less after a strict review of the Group’s domestic network and flight frequencies last year and as a result, the overall load factor improved year-on-year by 7 percentage points from 75.0% to 82.1%. JAL operated 192 extra flights this summer to key vacation destinations like Okinawa and Sapporo.
