JAL Group Achieves FY2025 Green Transformation Target

―Pioneering the Use of CORSIA-Eligible Fuels and Emission Units (Credits)―

Tokyo, JAPAN―In 2020, the JAL Group became the first Japanese airline to commit to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, and has been working towards its Green Transformation target to keep net CO2 emissions from aircraft below the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 level (9.21 million tons) by FY2025 (*1).

The JAL Group has continuously upgraded its fleet with fuel-efficient aircraft and implemented daily operational innovations. In addition, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and carbon credits has enabled achievement of the FY2025 target. Simultaneously, the target of replacing 1% of onboard fuel (approximately 40,000 kiloliters) with SAF in FY2025 was also achieved.

■ Promoting the Use of CORSIA (*2)-Eligible Fuel and Emission Units (Credits)

CORSIA is an international framework established by ICAO, which aims to offset and reduce carbon emissions by requiring international aviation to monitor emissions and limit increases. Ahead of other airlines worldwide, the JAL Group initiated the procurement and utilization of SAF meeting CORSIA-eligible fuel standards in FY2024, and the procurement and retirement of CORSIA-eligible credits in FY2025. Moving forward, the JAL Group will continue to reduce net CO2 emissions while ensuring transparency and quality through the CORSIA framework.

Toward achieving the FY2030 target of a 10% reduction from the FY2019 level (8.28 million tons), the JAL Group has set a new goal to reduce CO2 emissions from fuel combustion by 5% through the use of SAF in FY2030 (*3). The Group will also continue to pursue its existing target of replacing 10% of onboard fuel with SAF.

While striving to reduce CO2 emissions within the value chain through fleet upgrades to fuel-efficient aircraft, operational innovations, and the use of SAF, the JAL Group will also continue to pursue emission reductions beyond the value chain by utilizing CORSIA-eligible credits.

(*2) Abbreviation for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation. This international framework, established by ICAO, aims to offset and reduce carbon emissions by requiring international aviation to monitor emissions and limit increases to no more than 85% of 2019 CO2 emission levels. To claim emissions reduction under this scheme, the SAF and credits utilized must be CORSIA-eligible.
