Press Release
Construction of a New Landing Gear Maintenance Factory
Tokyo, JAPAN―On May 19, 2026, Japan Airlines (JAL) commenced the construction of a new factory within the Haneda Airport Maintenance District to perform maintenance on aircraft landing gear and other components, with completion scheduled for the end of December 2027. In conjunction with this, JAL established a new company, "Landing gear Innovation Factory Co., Ltd."(LIF) on June 8, 2026, which will hold the real estate related to the new factory. Through this initiative, JAL aims to further strengthen its landing gear maintenance capabilities cultivated over many years and establish a next-generation core base to meet global maintenance demand.

Landing gear is a key component that supports the aircraft during takeoff, landing, and taxiing--essentially acting as the aircraft's "legs". Overhaul maintenance of landing gear (gear maintenance) performed at the new factory is large-scale and conducted approximately every 10 years by removing the gear from the aircraft. This process requires highly advanced expertise and specialized facilities, including plating, next-generation thermal spraying, painting, surface treatment, and non-destructive inspection technologies.
JAL has been engaged in the gear maintenance of large aircraft for over 50 years, growing into one of the world's leading gear maintenance factories. The new factory will not only consolidate functions that are currently dispersed but will also introduce automated, labor-saving systems and new technology equipment being implemented in Japan for the first time. Through these efforts, JAL is committed to resolving social issues and creating value in the following areas:
・Succession of Technical Capabilities and Human Resource Development: Passing on JAL's expert technical skills to the next generation.
・Productivity Improvement: Enhancing quality and production efficiency through function consolidation and state-of-the-art equipment.
・Environmental Consideration: Reducing environmental impact by constructing an eco-friendly building.
Gear maintenance will continue to be primarily conducted by JAL Engineering Co., Ltd. (JALEC), which is responsible for aircraft maintenance across the JAL Group. JAL, JALEC and LIF will contribute to the safety of both Japanese and global flight operations, while also supporting the development of Japan's aviation industry.
