Japan Airlines to Introduce International Passenger Fare

Tokyo January 20: The JAL Group plans to introduce fuel surcharges on all international passenger tickets issued on or after February 1st, 2005, through September 30, 2005. The surcharges, announced on December 24, 2004, apply to flights operated by Japan Airlines and its international subsidiaries JALways and Japan Asia Airways. JAL originally planned to introduce the surcharges from January 20, but has delayed implementation, pending government approvals.

The rise in the cost of fuel is unprecedented and will have a very serious impact on JAL's financial performance. JAL has taken a wide range of counter measures to offset the price increase but has reached the limit of its own efforts and the company is reluctantly obliged to ask its international passengers to bear part of the burden.

On fares sold in Japan, the surcharges are based on flight sector distance and range from 500 yen to a maximum of 2,500 yen. Conversion to local currencies should be made using the applicable BSR at the time of ticketing*.

Special fuel surcharges are as follows, per person per segment:

The surcharges will be cancelled when the average monthly price of Singapore kerosene falls below the benchmark of US$40.00 per barrel.

  • The same amounts apply to adult/child/infant fares. The surcharges also apply to FFP award tickets issued to members of the JAL Mileage Bank and charter flight tickets.

  • In the case of refunds, the fuel surcharge will be refunded in full and the cancellation or refund charge will not be applied.
