JAL’s First Boeing 737-800 Next Generation Arrives in Japan
Tokyo, Tuesday November 21, 2006: JAL today held a ceremony at Tokyo's Haneda Airport to formally welcome the first state-of-the-art, single-aisle Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (JA301J) to its fleet. This more fuel-efficient, environment-friendly, small size 165-seat aircraft will be used initially on Japan domestic routes from March 2007, operating between Tokyo's Haneda airport and cities in west and southern Japan.
JAL has configured the domestic version of the 737-800 NG with 20 Class J seats - JAL's domestic business class seat - and 145 newly designed economy class seats with greater legroom. The aircraft was delivered by Boeing to JAL in Seattle, USA on November 14, 2006, and arrived in Japan on November 19, 2006 after a ferry flight via Honolulu and Guam.
The new aircraft is the first of 30 B737-800 models ordered by JAL, which will be delivered to the airline over the next five years. JAL also has options for another 10 aircraft. The B737-800 has been created using leading-edge technology and design, providing increased performance when compared to other aircraft from the B737 family.
Due to new wing design, blended winglets fitted on the wing tips, and improved engine performance, the B737-800 has a cruising distance of 4,500km (3,060 nautical miles), enabling the aircraft to be used not only on Japan domestic routes, but also on short to medium haul international routes.
JAL plans to start operating B737-800 aircraft on international routes to South East Asia and China in FY2007, the year ending March 31, 2008. B737-800s used on international routes will have a fully-fledged business class compartment, and economy class. Every seat will be equipped with its own personal in-flight entertainment system.. All business class seats and most economy class seats will also have an AC power supply suitable for laptops.
When compared to earlier models of the B737, the B737-800 offers approximately a 15% reduction in fuel consumption, enabling JAL to reduce overall operational costs. Furthermore, the B737-800 conforms to the strictest noise standards (ICAO, Chapter 4) making it more environment-friendly.
JAL is introducing the new aircraft to take advantage of the FY2009 opening of Tokyo's Haneda Airport fourth runway, which will increase total departure and arrival slots at the airport by 43%, enabling the resumption of scheduled international services at Haneda on short-to-medium-haul routes.
