JAL Selects Next-Gen Embraer E190-E2 for Regional Fleet Renewal

Tokyo, JAPAN - Japan Airlines (JAL) has decided to introduce the Embraer E190-E2 aircraft as the successor to the Embraer E170/E190 regional fleet operated by J-AIR Co., Ltd. (J-AIR), which operates an extensive network across Japan from its primary hub at Osaka International Airport (Itami). JAL has placed an order for 26 aircraft (16 firm orders and 10 options), with deliveries scheduled to start in fiscal year 2029.

In recent years, the domestic aviation sector has faced rapid changes in its operating environment, including declining business demand, long-term demographic shifts, and rising costs driven by inflation and currency headwinds. To address these challenges, the JAL Group is advancing business structure reforms outlined in its growth strategy, the "JAL Group Management Vision 2035," to maintain and develop a sustainable domestic network as essential social infrastructure for Japan. In particular, for J-AIR--which serves regional routes aiming to be the "most trusted and accessible airline" for local communities--the introduction of the state-of-the-art E190-E2 aircraft is positioned at the core of JAL's long-term strategy. Well-matched to future market demand and environmental trends, this fleet decision will enable sustainable domestic business operations while continuing to drive regional revitalization.
